Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Photographed July 2010.
The carefully chosen paths through the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest deliberately skirt away from the most magnificent examples of these millennial trees, whose roots are their most, and perhaps only, fragile aspect. In one corner of an oft-visited path stands a giant. Barren limbs reach skyward and our eyes follow... at first glance, the tree has finally succumbed to the ages... But no, from its magnificently convoluted trunk grow other branches bearing thick growths of life-bearing needles. Soon, these will dwarf its dead limbs, or, perhaps, join them as others sprout below... Photographed September 2010, Schulman Grove.
