A thunderstorm obscures Mt. Ararat, but its sister mountain, Sis, glows in afternoon light. Photographed September 2011.
Along a mile-long hike that makes one realize just how difficult it is to do anything at ten thousand feet, your gaze locks on a perfect window, a living frame of needles and striated bark for the hills beyond. As you approach down the slope, you can’t help but brace yourself against the giant trunk, and are shocked at the smoothness of the surface your fingers have rested upon. Images of statue rubbing, for luck, for love, and more, come to mind... No, it’s not the eager hands of tourists that have rubbed this tree trunk smooth, but the sands of time... Photographed September 24, 2010, Schulman Grove.
