Entropy... The steady, deliberate march toward disorder... One hundred thousand years ago, during one of myriad eruptions of the Long Valley supervolcano, a column of magma rose toward the surface... It cooled, crystallized and fractured into tall towers of basalt ready to be revealed by the erosive forces of nature... the steady march toward disorder began, with the pile of hexagonal rubble a reminder to the proud columns standing above of their imminent destiny.
The shoreline of the lake is never the same... The wind- whipped water forms swirling pools, deposits layers of fluffy froth on the shoreline, and can’t help but reflect the light show of sunset in its mirrored surface, whether the clouds that have gathered participate or not. What was unforgettable about this moment, though, was sharing it with the love of my life, who witnessed the wonders of Mono Lake for the first time and bid adieu to the day in my arms... I have always vowed to greet sunrise as often as I can, and on road trips this becomes a balancing act between photographing late into the night, greeting sunrise, and driving hundreds of miles afterward. On this last day of our father-son road trip, the already tenuous cloud cover began to stream away just as the first light of dawn touched the ancient walls of the canyon, setting the stage for a sunrise to be remembered...
