Asliver of sunlight is all it took... A sliver that found the gap between the hills forming Lundy Canyon, an almost too bright sliver of morning light... We see nature in reflected light, and when golden light falls on leaves of gold, the landscape shimmers as if glowing from within. All it takes, then is for the first light of morning to find a copse of aspen that, unlike their brethren up the canyon, or some that surround them, to have already donned their autumn coats, the bright yellows and reds that they will only wear for a week before entering the white slumber of winter. Entropy... The steady, deliberate march toward disorder... One hundred thousand years ago, during one of myriad eruptions of the Long Valley supervolcano, a column of magma rose toward the surface... It cooled, crystallized and fractured into tall towers of basalt ready to be revealed by the erosive forces of nature... the steady march toward disorder began, with the pile of hexagonal rubble a reminder to the proud columns standing above of their imminent destiny.
The shoreline of the lake is never the same... The wind- whipped water forms swirling pools, deposits layers of fluffy froth on the shoreline, and can’t help but reflect the light show of sunset in its mirrored surface, whether the clouds that have gathered participate or not. What was unforgettable about this moment, though, was sharing it with the love of my life, who witnessed the wonders of Mono Lake for the first time and bid adieu to the day in my arms...
